All registered persons under GST are required to file various returns. Main returns to be filed are GSTR-3B (which is a monthly summary) and GSTR 1 (details of outward supplies). GSTR 3B is to be filed every month by 20th. However, the government has recently introduced QRMP Scheme according to which if the turnover for a business for previous year is up to 5 crores, you can pay your GST on monthly basis and file your GSTR 3B quarterly. Finally, an annual GST return GSTR 9 must be filed by all GST registered entities on/before the 31st of December. GSTR 4 is to be filed if you have opted for composition scheme. The registered entities will be required to file GST returns even if the entity has not done any business during any period. Additionally, there’s yearly GSTR 9C to be filed, which is GST Annual Audit. It is a reconciliation statement which needs to be certified by a practicing Chartered Accountants.

It is mandatory to file GSTR-1 each month for every registered taxpayer. On the other hand, if you opt for the QRMP scheme, you have to file quarterly returns only.
Under GST, every person or entity registered under GST would be required to file a GST return for the prescribed period. Even those entities having a GST registration but no activity would be required to file a GST Nil Return to stay compliant with GST regulations.
Regular taxpayers would have to file GSTR-1 (details of outward supplies), GSTR-2 (details of inward supplied) and GSTR-3 (monthly return). GSTR-1 would be due on the 10th of each month, GSTR-2 would be due on the 15th of each month and GSTR-3 would be due on the 20th of each month. Compounding taxpayers must file GSTR-4 every quarter, on 18th of the month next to the quarter. In addition to the monthly or quarterly returns, an annual return must be filed by all persons or entities registered under GST. The due date for filing of annual GST return would be 31st of December following the end of financial year. In case of assesses having to complying with auditing requirements, the GST reconciliation statement must be duly certified by a Chartered Accountant.
If the turnover ranges between Rs.1.5 crore and Rs.5 crore then the maximum late fee of Rs.5,000 per return can only be charged (i.e Rs. 2500 each for CGST and SGST). If the turnover is more than Rs.5 crore then late fee of maximum Rs.10,000 (i.e Rs. 5000 per CGST and SGST) can be charged.
